Multi-venue Bristol festival Simple Things returns on 18th and 19th October and it’s bigger and better than ever…

After a stellar 2018 that saw standout performances from the likes of Black Midi, Kamaal Williams and Helena Hauff, Bristol festival Simple Things returns with a lineup that celebrates innovative and forward thinking sounds across six venues around the city: SWX, The Colston Hall, We The Curious, Rough Trade, The Sportsmans, The IMAX Cinema and Lakota & Coroners Court. Check our review of last year’s edition here.

This year Simple Things also feature an opening party which will take place at IMAX from 7pm to 11pm; the premiere of a new audio-visual performance from William Basinki, Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand. With original music composed by Basinki, Domnitch and Gelfand present “10000 Peacock Feathers in Foaming Acid” using laser light to scan the fleeting surfaces of soap bubble clusters.

2019 will see a debut of Simple Things EXT. too, a programme of additional performances, discussions and art installations. Highlights over October 17th to 19th include Holly Herndon and Matt Dryhurst in conversation with Chal Ravens, Curve by Squidsoup (aka the lighting for those insane Four Tet shows), and 15 years of Hyperdub with Kode9, Cooly G and Marcus Scott.

For the main festival on Saturday October 19th, we’ve chosen a few of our highlights (no mean feat with such a strong lineup) from the daytime and nighttime programming. Get stuck in below…
