With their debut album out this October, Scottish four-piece The Vegan Leather has been gathering a great deal of attention for their dancefloor-ready art-pop. Having recently released their new single ‘The Hit’ we caught up with them to find out a little more about the band.
Reminiscent of early noughties Franz Ferdinand and the like, The Vegan Leather’s sound channels a certain nostalgia and classic feel whilst also offering their own distinctive, playful edge. Their latest single ‘The Hit’ is a punchy, disco-infused track that further builds the anticipation for their debut record Poor Girls/ Broken Boys due out in October.
We caught up with Gianluca Bernacchi (vocals, guitar & synths in the band) to find out a little more about them…

Three words to describe our music…
Heavy, hooky, analog
Last photo on your phone…
A screen shot of a magazine write in that says “WHY is that classical musicians in orchestras get lauded as being the creme de la creme in the world of instrumentalists, when they all require sheet music to help them remember the tune? I saw Napalm Death a few weeks ago and they didn’t have to look at a book once. They could remember all the songs just fine, and most of their ones are loads faster than any Beethoven or Mozart.” Absolute genius.
Favourite instagram account…
@surrealsimpsons
This account has really made me appreciate the real genius behind some of The Simpson’s weirder moments. Otto’s talking shoes.
The best venue I’ve played…
We once played a bar at the Edinburgh Fringe a few years ago, the stage itself was a tiny hexagon about 4 feet high. It gave me serious Arcade Fire in the round vibes. I’m into the challenge.
Earliest song you remember…
Dooms Night by Azzido Da Bass is the first track that I can put a name to in my memory. I’m sure I must’ve heard music before that but I couldn’t name it, I was only a young boy.
The worst job I’ve ever had…
Flyering for a restaurant in the rain wasn’t amazing, but I try to keep a positive attitude toward most things. Make a game out of it! See how many post boxes you can rattle in an hour, then try to beat that record!
Favourite food on tour…
Gotta keep on that grape game. Fruit is hella important when you’re lugging amps about most of the day, and rocking out for the rest! \m/
My Favourite word…
‘Ebeneezer’. As in, Ebeneezer Goode by The Shamen.
Things that cheer me up…
Black coffee no sugar, fun excursions with my friends and looking at the beautiful hills that surround Glasgow and Paisley!
If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
As a proud Paisley citizen it has been a long held dream of mine to perform either in or just outside Paisley Gilmour Street Station, County Square is basically an amphitheatre. There used to be an annual festival held called the Two Rivers, perfect spot for a late summer epic!
I think you should listen to…
You need to go listen to DRIFT, Chuchoter, Fauves, and Spyres.
If I could see anyone play live it would be…
A supergroup formed of Annie Clark, Yannis Philippakis from Foals, Ringo Starr and the keyboard dude with the treadmill from Rammstein. They would play at the Deaf Institute in Manchester and it would be fabulous.
The Vegan Leather plays Fermez la Bouche at Notting Hill Arts Club on September 26th.
